Middle class people do not pay for their tools. In fact, they shouldn’t need tools beyond the basic tools of literacy (books, pen and paper 100 years ago, a computer today). Poor people use specialized tools. Rich people buy them. Middle class people merely supervise the use of the rich people’s tools (capital) by the poor (labor). Even today, if you use specialized tools to work, your membership in the middle class is suspect.

Daily chart: the cost of cocaine. The street price of cocaine in Europe has dropped relentlessly over the past two decades, which may explain why Europe is now almost as big a market for cocaine producers as America.

Now, I’m not an economist but surely if the street price has fallen then Europe would become less of a desirable market. Perhaps the price has fallen because cocaine producers have been targetting Europe. Just saying.
